Amazon has announced that its Prime Air drone delivery service now covers over 100 million US households, marking a dramatic expansion from its initial launch in just a handful of cities. The service promises delivery of packages weighing up to 5 pounds within 30 minutes of ordering.
The expansion was enabled by the FAA's updated Part 135 regulations for autonomous drone operations, which streamlined the approval process for commercial drone delivery in suburban and rural areas. Amazon now operates over 50,000 delivery drones across 35 states.
The drones use a combination of computer vision, lidar, and AI-powered navigation to safely deliver packages to designated landing zones at customers' homes. Each drone can fly up to 15 miles and operates autonomously from hundreds of distribution hubs strategically placed near population centers.
Customer adoption has exceeded expectations, with over 30 million deliveries completed in the past year alone. The service is particularly popular in suburban areas where traditional delivery can take longer, and in rural communities that previously had limited access to same-day delivery.
Environmental benefits are also significant: Amazon reports that drone deliveries produce 84% fewer carbon emissions per package compared to traditional truck delivery, contributing to the company's Climate Pledge commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2040.
